ST PAUL’S IN THE PARK

St. Pauls in the Park is an Anglican Church and Community Building in Flat Bush Auckland. Internal spaces include an open Auditorium, community rooms, lounges, offices, and utilities. The structural system incorporates a complex roof form that is supported by glue-laminated timber (Glulam) gravity and portals, sloping precast concrete external walls (that are propped by the timber roof structure), light timber frame walls and purlins with plywood sheathing. The Auditorium roof was formed by expressed glulam portals with glued-knee joints (made in the factory) with bolted apex connections, providing an attractive and clean finish. This project was challenging due to two incongruous performance criteria; achieve a tight budget (that was constrained by donations) but achieve awe-inspiring building form.
