Tapu House

Tapu House is a high-performance passive house situated atop a hill in the Coromandel Peninsula. Three pods comprise the main house which sits above a bunker-like garage cut into the hill. The geometry of the house is extremely unconventional and demands a keen eye for details and connections, and a knack for spatial and geometric awareness. The house was featured in an episode of Grand Designs New Zealand 2022. A finely-tuned continuous 600 mm deep curved glulam ring beam following the outline of the roof distributes the extremely high wind loads to angled blockwork walls below. Box beam trusses form the roof with rafters extending to almost reach the ground.
